PAUL BLACKMAN – Co-Director/Founder: Paul has had 35 years experience working as an educator with
children of all ages and ability levels.
His business background includes running a computer company for four years in the early eighties and being self-employed as an educational consultant and counsellor for the past five years.
Paul has recently established his own business Nurturing Young Minds Ltd. The focus is on providing educational programmes to enhance young children’s learning in combination with fun games backed by robust research. He has an excellent network of educational connections world-wide and a wealth of knowledge on what works and what doesn’t. His recent experience has been developing resources including computer games which are based on leading edge research in neuroscience.
Paul plays tennis and the piano and loves walking his dog Tess on the beach. He is excited about the possibility of making a difference to the lives of children world-wide.
STEPHEN KNIGHTLY - Manager of Game Development: Stephen Knightly is an experienced technology marketer,
business consultant and game designer. Stephen is chairperson of the New Zealand Game Developers Association, a board member
of Creative Digital Content Auckland, and regularly speaks on gaming, education and new media topics.
Stephen has a strong track record in using technology for successful marketing and training campaigns, and working with innovation start-ups. His clients have included X Box, MTV Games, Microsoft Europe, HP, Unilever, along with corporate work for Fonterra, IBM and many high-growth technology exporters. Stephen is the former Director of Marketing for the University of Waikato and Director of a technology and innovation marketing agency, Pursuit PR.
NATHAN MIKAERE-WALLIS – Training Manager: Nathan was a lecturer at Canterbury University for 10 years, a
neuroscience presenter for Brainwave and a Child Protection trainer. He is currently Director of Training for the Brainwave Trust
and serves on many Boards, including Brainwave, Cholmondeley Children’s Home, The Champion Centre and Youth Mentoring Network.
In addition to being a father with a history as a foster parent, his professional background is in child counselling, teaching, and social service management. He has built up a nationwide reputation as a lively and engaging speaker on the topic of brain development. Nathan uses humour to make this sometimes complex topic, both easy to understand and easily related to everyday experiences.
ERIC WOODS - Game Development: Eric is a double first-class honours graduate in Biochemistry and Applied Computing (Graphics). While at Lincoln University, Eric completed a number of award winning short films and developed interests in 3D animation. He furthered these interests by learning interactive graphics programming techniques that are ideal for scientific visualisation and education.
Eric is currently working on a reading game which uses word recognition and animation that turns reading into a game to fully engages engages young children. He is passionate about using games to aid learning. The 3D work Eric did for POPAR books in the US recently won the New York Toy Fair.
BRENDAN JACKSON - Co-Director: Brendan brings a wealth of local and international experience to this position . He holds a Diploma of Business Management and his background includes 14 years working in South Africa and developing a start up business Bryant West in 2003 based in Auckland. Bryant West is now a highly successful company having a secured distribution agreements for a number of inventions, e-commerce and new products world-wide. Notable amongst these are OTC Pharma International whose self care products are now in 52 countries.
In South Africa, Brendan Co-Founded Mail Wise International which had a staff of 64 people and was sold as a Publicly Listed Company.
In his spare time Brendan enjoys all sports, plays golf and enjoys reading. He has played representative rugby being part of the 1990 International 7’s Tournament in Western Samoa and the World XV Springbok selection in 1995.
SABINE TYRVAINEN - UK Representative: Sabine is a Clinical, Health and Peak Performance Psychologist who believes that supporting children to become multi-dimensional adults leading full, happy, successful and varied lives not only serves those individuals but enriches everyone around them and helps create a better society and future.
Sabine’s list of international high profile sports clients is impressive and includes Olympic athletes and national and multiple World Champions. Her reputation in the field of elite-sports psychology led to a key consultancy role on the best-selling book, ‘The Winner’s Bible’ and more recently she worked for the New Zealand Government’s top secret Olympic ‘GoldMine’ project which achieved record gold medals per capita success at the London 2012 Olympics. She is member of an international advisory group providing expert guidance to a national Olympic Committee for Rio 2016.

JULIENNE ROSE - Facilitator: Julienne will be using her expertise to assist with the development and
implementation of the educational workshops by providing ways to help teachers work with students to change their core beliefs.
Julienne is a Wellness Coach and International PSYCH-K Instructor. She facilitates workshops in personal change as well as running a successful private practice. Her workshops around Australasia help transform lives by teaching processes to release the limitations of the mind. Her background includes teaching, working with youth, recruitment and coaching. As well as her Post Graduate work in Career Development, Julienne has also studied and applied NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), PSYCH-K and MBTI Personality type.
Her vision is to empower others to access their strengths to realise the potential within them to live happy and successful lives.
JOHANNA MATHIS-BLACKMAN - Editor: Johanna is a language teacher and holds a B.A, Dip. Teachng and Cambridge
Dip. TEFLA. She started her career teaching English in New Zealand secondary schools and has taught in Switzerland and English
language schools in Christchurch, Rotorua and Whitianga. She has also been an examiner for IELTS.
Johanna has travelled widely and loves learning language. She is fluent in German, and also speaks Dutch and French. Johanna enjoys gardening, walking and reading. She has an excellent understanding of how people learn language.
